EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
