British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a joint strike targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of access tunnels down to the facility... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their valour," he said. "They were among numerous British personnel deployed over the festive period. This mission, to eliminate militants who pose a risk to our safety, shows how our armed forces are ready to step up, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces carried out what it termed a "major assault" against Islamic State objectives in the country, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports Daesh still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
